Week 2. Let’s go!

The Game Plan

This week our main focus is coming up with the skits/stories we want to create. Our aim is to create 3 separate skits that don’t necessarily correlate with each other. We believe in showing a range of characters and dialogue to challenge our skills.
Currently, we have 3 very rough ideas:
-
Two teenage friends (Stacy and Taylor) are having a sleepover when the third member of their friend group wakes them by yelling “Stacey!” The friend in question is a drag queen who is in dire need of Stacey’s nail glue… at 2 am...
-
A teenager (Taylor) runs a Dungeon&Dragons campaign and has decided to let their younger siblings (Sally & Oscar) plus their friends join a game. The skit shows them, in a DnD world, at the climax of an adventure when they are rudely brought back to reality by a phone ringing.
-
Set at the twins' high school you are introduced to their friend group. For some circumstance (Still working on that bit), a member f their group (Owen) who has a prosthetic leg has to run rapidly. During this, his prosthetic falls off. He is embarrassed, and one person mocks him… however the rest of the group decides to teach that person a lesson...

What's next?

Now we need to get all our ideas out and how we’re going to go forward from there.
Kelsey and I have started holding weekly meetings to discuss any and all thoughts, ideas, and worries we have. Then we began expanding on those ideas and how we can piratically go about achieving things. The main concerns we had were with scripting and designing 2 new characters.

The characters in question are the 2 older teenagers who are in the first rough idea. Stacey and “the drag queen friend” were originally all we had for this. We were improving back and forth for a while as these characters long before we had even considered this as an actual scene would animate. We only started this bit to explain our vision of a drag queen character, and before we knew it, we had a scene idea. Now we had to actually expand on these characters.
As Stacey and (the drag friend we are currently calling) DD are the best friends of Taylor, Kelsey suggested we make them all Gothic/punk to match in with Taylor’s style. Thus also making them the stereotypical “emo” trio in the show, which also provides a lot of future opportunities in the show. As Taylor is Non-binary and DD is male, we decided to make Stacey a very feminine goth/”e-girl” so that we have a wider range of character visuals. With DD we had somewhat clearer ideas. Although we both had different ideas, we settled on DD being a powerful combo of jock, goth, and fabulous. DD is to have a strong build as well as a masculine Gothic attire. However, once he’s in drag, his outfits are bright and bold with make-up to match. I visualized as DD with extravagant hair and a diamond-like outfit, purely because we once improvised his drag name as “Diamond Dozen” however, this may not be the final name.
Visual ideas and characteristics were bounced back and forth until we felt confident we could progress. As Kelsey is a character designer, we decided they would design the characters and I would look into scripting for the same scene.
Having never created a script before, I decided to get in contact with some friends who do. I firstly contacted a friend who writes stories and is a professional editor/proofreader, who was able to provide some insight into story creation and gave me creative pointers. Then I got a hold of a friend who creates scripts. When I first messaged them, they asked what scriptwriting software I had, and then I learned that Microsoft word if not a scriptwriting software… He introduced me to a software called Celtx. While it was pretty damn good, it came with a price tag, and sadly, I can’t afford that. After digging a little deeper, I was able to find a free software called Scenarist which looked perfect. It allows for idea cards and aids with formatting. Now all I need to do is… write a script for the first time…

A Rough, Weak As Heck Storyboard Start For Skit 1
Rough Quick Sketches For the D'n'D Skit
Based on the twin's personalities, I decided to create some concepts of their possible D'n'D characters. As sally is boisterous and reckless, making her a barbarian orc seemed only appropriate. There was also the talk of making her skin hot pink, but we'll see!
Oscar is a quiet and reserved character, making him a perfect fit for a thief rouge. I felt keeping him human was a bit boring, so thought about how he would consider character building. As he puts a lot of thought into everything he does, I think he would put effort into getting the best stats he could for a rouge character. Therefore probably choosing to be a high elf rough due to their bonus stats and abilities.
As for Taylor, I thought it would be fun to put this deadpan punk character into the official D'n'D Dungeon Master costume, and it will take a lot to change my mind.
